The Future of Biodegradables in Gastrointestinal Surgery

A Clinical Based Rational for Reengineering the Patient Pathway for the Treatment of Hepatopancreatobiliary Diseases with Novel Biodegradable Implants

🗓 September 15, 2022 | 🕐 17:00 – 19:30 CEST | 🌐  Virtual

The Course is complimentary and it will be held in the English language

Why join us?

Plastic biliary and pancreatic stents are used an estimated 2 Million times annually and expected to grow to well over 4 million in 2030, based on the accelerating adoption of endoscopy in the Asian-Pacific Region. ASGE reports that the current plastic stents have complication rates as high as 30% and require a second procedure for removal or confirmatory Xray. The Xray is used to document the absence of a previously placed device in the case of prophylaxis for Post-ERCP Pancreatitis placements.

Due to the treatment of complications and the necessity of a second removal procedure that increases the cost for the patient, hospitals, and healthcare providers, it is essential to dedicate efforts to understand how to best utilize the latest biodegradable innovations in the field of GI Endoscopy to reduce the total cost of care – A Clinical Based Rational for Reengineering the Patient Pathway for the Treatment of Hepatopancreatobiliary Diseases with  Novel Biodegradable Implants.

The biodegradable program will discuss how to streamline the patient experience through the reengineering of the traditional pathway and to improve Quality of Life (QoL)and reduce costs through improved outcomes and the elimination of removal procedures associated with the current non-biodegradable technology.

The program has been structured to raise awareness of the use of biodegradable implants and how they can reduce patient, provider, and environmental burdens through the elimination of the unnecessary removal procedures and reduction in complications vs. plastic implants. The use of biodegradable implants may improve outcomes and reduce cost versus the current standard of care.

Patient Pathway Comparison

The program will look at how the current patient pathway using the traditional plastic stent may be modified through the use of the ARCHIMEDES biodegradable biliopancreatic implants and how this may impact QoL and the total cost of care for these patients. A high-level overview of the current pathway including hospital and patient related cost and reimbursement (Hospital and Physician) to that of the new ARCHIMEDES biodegradable biliopancreatic implant will be reviewed by our esteemed panel.

ARCHIMEDES Overview

The ARCHIMEDES BPS comes with a Fast (12 days), Medium (20 days), and Slow (11 weeks) Degradation Profile, where 10% of their strength retention remains at these time points. The ARCHIMEDES is intended to be used by healthcare professionals with appropriate training, knowledge and experience in biliary and pancreatic stenting. The ARCHIMEDES BPS device is used to drain obstructed biliary or pancreatic ducts and is indicated for obstructed biliary or pancreatic ducts.

In addition, the program will discuss what type of Degradation Profile is recommended for what indications and underlying diseases, to match the disease with the correct degradation treatment time to ensure the best outcomes.

Clinical Evidence

Included in the program will be a review of the current body of clinical evidence available on the novel ARCHIMEDES BPS implant that can also be found at www.amggastro.com/studies.html and www.amggastro.com/videos.html

Future Developments

In addition the program will discuss the future developments around biodegradable implants that have the opportunity to reduce the total cost of care through the elimination of removal procedures and complications associated with the current available technology, while improving QoL and sustainability.
