Petros Benias

Title: MD
Position: Interventional Advanced Endoscopist
Organization: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
Country: USA

Dr. Benias is an interventional advanced endoscopist with a focus on pancreaticobiliary disorders. He has dedicated a significant part of his career to a variety of techniques in endoscopic surgery such as Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) for early tumors and dysplasia of the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Benias and the endscopy team are nationally recognized and experienced in endosurgical techniques such as Per oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for achalasia, gastroparesis and Zenker’s diverticulae.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Benias dedicated to research and mentoring others in a variety of endoscopic techniques. His research activities have paralleled his clinical interests and are actively looking at variations in techniques to improve outcomes for patients undergoing POEM, continuing to collect data on same-day-discharge for endosurgical procedures and are very active in developing and implementing novel endoscopic GERD therapies. Dr. Benias has a concomitant interest in advanced endoscopic imaging, which complements capabilities in early gastrointestinal cancer.

He has been on the forefront of using technologies such as endomicroscopy for biliary strictures, lymph nodes and pancreatic cysts. In particular, he has participated in pioneering work regarding the use of confocal endomicroscopy at the time of EUS to determine malignant lymph node involvement. Efforts have also elucidated novel gastrointestinal microanatomy, and this continues to drive future research efforts. Programmatic work in this field has received national recognition and Dr. Benias is frequently invited to showcase his research and techniques and to participate in the training of other physicians across the nation.
