Dr. Juan Manuel Alcívar is a gastroenterologist who has dedicated his professional life to the study and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Born in Manabí, he pursued higher education at the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil. Later, he decided to specialize in Spain, where he studied advanced and therapeutic digestive endoscopy.
Dr. Alcívar not only gained a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system but also developed a holistic appreciation of the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and effective communication in the diagnostic and treatment process. After completing an exceptional medical education, he joined the medical staff of the Ecuadorian Institute of Digestive Diseases (IECED). At this center, he treats gastroenterological diseases affecting the digestive tract, liver, and pancreas. He also performs digestive and therapeutic endoscopy, manages variceal and non-variceal digestive bleeding, conducts simple and complex polypectomies, including high-risk mucosectomy, and places prostheses in both the upper and lower digestive tract, among other complex procedures that have saved hundreds of lives.
He runs the department of Bariatric Endoscopy and is chief of Endoscopy department of IECED. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Alcívar has significantly contributed to the medical community and gastroenterological knowledge through the publication of numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and his participation as a speaker at national and international medical conferences. He has also been a dedicated mentor and trainer for generations of young gastroenterologists.
