Shyam Thakkar MD, FASGE
Dr. Thakkar is the Director of Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy and Professor of Medicine at West
Virginia University. He is focused on the vision and strategy of an Endoscopy Service Line that can
support the needs of the entire state of West Virginia.
His clinical practice focuses on advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He also devotes a significant
amount of time to clinical research and has served as the principal investigator on numerous studies.
As part of his work at WVU Medicine, he oversees a cutting-edge research lab which focuses on
artificial intelligence and innovation.
Dr. Thakkar has additionally been recognized for his innovations and contributions to the community
by the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and
National Pancreas Foundation. Most recently, he has founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to
the advancement of interventional gastroenterology known as FITE, Foundation for Interventional
and Therapeutic Endoscopy.
