Dr Sharmila Subramaniam graduated from the University of Nottingham, UK with first class honours and completed gastroenterology postgraduate training in London and Wessex. She has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust since 2020 with an interest in advanced luminal and third space endoscopy.

Dr Subramaniam has undertaken an Advanced Endoscopy Research fellowship in Portsmouth under the tutelage of Professor Pradeep Bhandari, gaining a PhD in optical diagnosis for early gastrointestinal cancers alongside training in POEM/EMR/ESD. Her current research and clinical interests are in the field of optical imaging, artificial intelligence, Barrett’s oesophagus and the use of minimally invasive endoscopic resection methods for colonic polyps and upper GI cancers. Dr Subramaniam is the Endoscopy Training Lead at her hospital and is involved in running endoscopy workshops and training forums nationally.
