Beatrice Casini is Professor of General and Applied Hygiene at the University of Pisa, Italy, and Staff Microbiologist of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Unit of the University Tertiary Hospital of Pisa. Her research aims to provide evidence to improve patient safety, through the verification of environmental and medical devices disinfection procedures, for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. She also deal with the molecular epidemiology of multidrug resistant strains and horizontal gene transfer of resistance genes. Her field of study also extends to the detection of microbial aerosol dispersion and to the assessment of airborne biological risk in the community and healthcare setting.

Beatrice Casini graduated in Biology at the University of Pisa in 1993. Then, she obtained a postgraduate Diploma of Specialist in Microbiology and Virology at the Faculty of Medicine (4 academic years – 3rd level Italian degree) in 2000.
From 2001 to 2005 Beatrice Casini had a Research fellowship with funding support from Italian Ministry of Health “Development of analytical methods for the detection of viruses in environmental matrices: application to the workplace risk assessment” at the University of Pisa. In 2006 she became Assistant professor in General and Applied Hygiene, at University of Pisa. From 2017 Beatrice Casini is Associate Professor in General and Applied Hygiene at University of Pisa and she is also Hospital Staff Microbiologist at Azienda Ospedaliera-Universitaria Pisana, Pisa, Italy, Unit of Hospital Hygiene and Epidemiology.

She is member of the SITI (Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health), EUPHA (European Public Health Association), ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases), HIS (Healthcare Infection Society) and SIMPIOS.
